<image:title>Blog - Atypical Anorexia Is Not "Less Serious" Anorexia - “You don’t Look Anorexic”</image:title>
<image:caption>If you have ever been told that you can't have anorexia because you don't look like you have anorexia, this post is for you. If you have ever sat in a doctor's office, described months or years of restriction and watched the provider glance at your body and minimize what you shared, this post is for you, too. Unfortunately this is all too common and so. incredibly. harmful. Let’s unpack why this is wrong and why your eating disorder is absolutely valid, even if your body never becomes visibly emaciated (hint: most do not).</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Nourishment as Defiance: How Activism Strengthens Eating Disorder Recovery</image:title>
<image:caption>Recovery from an eating disorder is often framed as an individual journey- a private battle and personal healing process. And while it is absolutely personal, what gets missed in mainstream narratives of recovery is that it is also a collective process in the pursuit of liberation. This becomes clearer when we understand that eating disorders are social justice issues. The way we relate to our body and the bodies of others is inextricably tied to systems of oppression such as sexism, racism, anti-fat bias, ableism and cisheterosexism.</image:caption>

<image:caption>If you are in recovery, consider journaling about these questions: Where have I been taught to stay quiet? What systems benefit from my body hatred? What would it mean to nourish myself as an act of defiance? Remember: Your voice does not have to be loud to matter, but when you begin using it, you make space for others to do the same. <image:title>Blog - How the Culture of Intensive Motherhood Makes PostPartum OCD Flourish - When Constant Worry Robs Motherhood</image:title>
<image:caption>I’m smiling in this picture and it was indeed a sweet memory of taking my little one on his first hike in the woods. But there is a lot this picture doesn’t show: the heated argument my partner and I just got into over the timing of our babies next feed, the marathon level energy it took to get out of the house and go on a day trip while running on little sleep, the constant worry I might stumble on a rock and fall over while carrying my baby- face first. These are just a few of the thoughts I remember circulating in my brain in this moment. Something I learned early on in this motherhood journey is the worry is relentless and so much of it is amplified by the cultural expectations of mothers. As someone who has struggled with OCD nearly my whole life, I became curious about how intensive motherhood ideology (the cultural expectation to be the perfect mother and worse, that anything less means you are in some way harmful) fuels perinatal OCD. Let’s break down how this happens. And I hope, like me, as you read this, a part of you can detach your worth from being “perfect” as a parent.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How the Culture of Intensive Motherhood Makes PostPartum OCD Flourish - Perinatal OCD Support</image:title>
<image:caption>Perinatal OCD doesn’t mean you’re a bad parent. In fact, the intensity of your distress often reflects how deeply you care- OCD attacks what we value most (rude, I know). The problem is (OCD) colliding with a patriarchal cultural ideology (the perfect mother myth) that ties a woman’s worth to being the perfect mother. Learning how to trust yourself in motherhood and heal from postpartum OCD can give you back your life and help you savor the moments that matter most- those precious snuggles with your newborn or playing hide and seek with your toddler. If this resonates with you and you’re looking for a therapist- we can help! Reach out to schedule a free 15 minute phone call to learn more about our approach and services.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Racial Trauma: Healing, Resilience and the Wisdom of the Body - A Closing Reflection</image:title>
<image:caption>Racial trauma is not a personal failure or individual pathology. It is a natural response to living in unjust systems. Healing does not mean forgetting, bypassing or pretending harm did not occur. It means listening to the body, honoring ancestral wisdom, grieving what was lost and reclaiming our capacity for connection and collective care. If you’re a BIPOC person seeking therapy, you might be very hesitant, since help from dominant systems is often unsafe- not to mention many of our cultures dissuade us from seeking help in the form of therapy. However, there are anti-racist, decolonial therapists out there that specialize in working in a culturally aware and affirming practice. If you’re interested in learning more about that, reach out to my team. We all operate from an anti-oppressive lens and most of us are also BIPOC. If we are not the right fit, we are happy to give your trusted referrals for someone that may share your identities!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Exercise is widely talked about as a mental health intervention- especially in the new year. And for many people, movement feels regulating, grounding, and supportive. This may be especially true for neurodivergent folks who are sensory seeking. At the same time, exercise exists within a culture that prizes thinness, discipline, control and hyper productivity. These values end up shaping how and why people move their bodies and can turn into what feels like an addiction to exercise.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - When the Headlines Reopen Wounds: Sexual Trauma, Institutional Betrayal and The Epstein Files - Why We need to Talk About This</image:title>
<image:caption>If you could see me right now, I’m letting out a BIG sigh of frustration, sadness and anger. As the Jeffrey Epstein saga continues to circulate in the media, many sexual assault survivors are finding themselves pulled back into traumatic memories, sensations and emotions they thought they had worked hard to heal from or bury. Even for those whose trauma occurred decades ago, seeing headlines about powerful men exploiting children and not being held accountable and files released with redactions that protect perpetrators not survivors— is enough for anyone to be reactivated and feel like their own trauma is unfolding and suddenly open to public debate. If you have ever wondered why so many survivors do not report their abusers, this is exactly why. There is rarely any justice, even for the most heinous acts of sexual violence towards women and children. And even if there are some instances of justice, the psychological safety of survivors is never centered in the process. If this has been your experience, know that you’re far from alone. This is horrifying to watch unfold and incredibly devastating for any survivors out there.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Therapy that integrates eating disorder recovery with attachment-informed and depth-oriented work can support this phase of healing in a meaningful way. Rather than focusing only on symptoms, therapy can help explore how relational patterns formed, what they once protected, and how new ways of relating can slowly take shape. Often times, the client-therapist relationship becomes a safe space to practice asserting your needs, expressing your feelings and working through ruptures. These are all valuable lessons that can be transferred to your everyday relationships.</image:caption>

<image:caption>If you’re paying attention, it is a frightening time in U.S. history. Many people, citizens and non-citizens alike, are scared, shocked and outraged by the current administration’s attacks and inhumane treatment of immigrants and the ongoing scapegoating of undocumented people. Immigrant scapegoating is nothing new. It is a political tool that has been used for centuries in the United States and across the world (think Nazi Germany, for example). When those in power need control, distraction or loyalty, they often turn to dehumanizing a vulnerable group. Fear is intentionally constructed, blame is displaced and power is preserved.</image:caption>

Taking action moves us out of freeze and increases hope that fighting this is possible and our efforts are not futile. <image:title>Blog - The Intersection of Eating Disorders & Bipolar Disorder: Coping Tips From a Therapist - Eating Disorders and Bipolar Disorder</image:title>
<image:caption>Shifts in mood such as depression, hypomania, and mania can significantly affect hunger cues, energy levels, and eating patterns, which may complicate the process of eating disorder recovery. It’s also essential to emphasize that eating disorders are not choices. They often develop as coping mechanisms and, for some people, as a way to create a sense of structure or control. Because bipolar disorder can feel unpredictable and destabilizing, engaging in eating disorder behaviors may serve as an unconscious way to attempt to manage that internal chaos or regain a (false) sense of control. Although bipolar disorder is a lifelong condition, it is very treatable with the right support and care. At the same time, full recovery from an eating disorder is possible.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Body Image Journaling Prompts: A Mindful Approach to Coping with Body Image Distress - Body Image Healing Is ongoing work for most people in Eating Disorder Recovery.</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the most common questions I get as an eating disorders therapist is: how do I learn to accept my body? And while I wish there was a quick answer to this, it is truly different for everyone. There is not one single magic coping skill that works for everyone and even when a coping skill resonates with you, it's going to take time, practice and lots of self-compassion to tune out the constant barrage of messages from the culture that our bodies are never good enough, never thin enough, never youthful enough (at least if you’re in your 30’s like me). The road to healing from body image distress is often lifelong- and I know that’s not the answer you want to hear. However, there will be seasons where it will feel quieter, and that makes this work all worth it. Life transitions or periods of stress can make dormant body image issues suddenly flare up. This does not mean failure, trust me, this is something 99% of people in recovery experience over time. That being said, having strategies and supports to lean on during negative body image flares is crucial, that way you don’t turn to eating disorder behaviors or another similarly destructive coping mechanism strategy. Body image healing is also about building a relationship to your body, being able to offer it the same compassion you offer a friend, even if it frustrates you. Journaling is something that many of my clients find helpful for building a new relationship to their body and personally I do, too. I’ll share with you why, as well as some prompts below to get you started.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Harm often happens in eating disorder treatment settings (often unintentionally) but impactful nonetheless. If you carry a marginalized identity, the likelihood for harm increases. I have had many queer and trans clients express blatant discrimination in eating disorder higher levels of care, and in the mental health system more broadly. This is real, and we need to talk about it so we can shift as a field to be more affirming and inclusive.</image:caption>

<image:caption>If you are queer and/or trans: we want you to know that affirming spaces DO exist and even though its unfair, please do not give up trying to find a space that welcomes you, that you don’t have to “teach” or mask for. You are not too much, and you deserve safe spaces to explore your relationship to food and body. If you want help looking for an affirming treatment center (there are some good ones out there) or provider, feel free to ask us. Even if we can’t work with you (e.g. if you need a higher level of care, if you aren’t located in a state we are licensed in, etc), we will help you find somewhere/someone that can. The organization FedUp: Trans Folks Fighting Eating Disorders has a wonderful list of resources and affirming providers, so be sure to check them out too!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How OCD Hijacks Your Sense of Reality: 4 Reasoning Tricks That Fuel Obsessional Doubt - OCD is extremely Convincing</image:title>
<image:caption>OCD has a way of feeling very real, otherwise we wouldn’t pay attention to the intrusive thoughts and there would be no need for compulsions. We might even logically know it sounds ‘off’ but for a variety of reasons, we believe it might actually be true for us, even if we can see it is probably unlikely for others. This happens with OCD for many reasons, one factor is that our ‘feared possible self’ makes us vulnerable to certain OCD themes. Another factor is the “tricks” OCD plays on us to create a convincing narrative for why the intrusive thoughts should matter to us. Both the feared possible self and tricks of OCD are concepts from I-CBT treatment for OCD. Let’s take a look into what some of the common tricks are so that you can start building awareness of when and how OCD takes ahold of your thoughts and feelings. According to I-CBT (and what I have noticed in my work with clients), this awareness alone can help increase personal agency in whether or not we do a compulsion.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Relational Harm OCD: When Relationship, Harm, and Scrupulosity Themes Collide - Harm OCD:</image:title>
<image:caption>When I first learned about OCD, I really resonated with the phrasing offered to me at the time of having a “hyper-inflated sense of responsibility.” This language has really informed my understanding of many themes of OCD, but especially harm. If you don’t already know, OCD is often categorized into themes such as scrupulosity (which can be religious-focused or more largely concern themes of morality), contamination, relationship OCD and more. Traditionally when I think of harm OCD, I think about egodystonic intrusive thoughts and fears around physically harming others (e.g. “What if I snap and kill my partner?”), which can feel extra scary when you aren’t aware of what OCD is. Hint: it’s not an actual desire to hurt your partner, it’s the fear of doing so. Two very important aspects of understanding OCD are that the intrusive thoughts are opposite to what the person values (egodystonic) and that OCD often hyperfixates on and makes the person question their values (because you probably wouldn’t be so distressed if you didn’t care about these things!).</image:caption>

<image:caption>Many people are surprised to hear that eating disorder rates are actually higher among queer and trans folks than their hetero and cis peers- with trans folks having the highest rates of eating disorders among all demographics of people. I suspect this is because, in the same way LGBTQIA+ people are erased from mainstream society, they are also often pushed to the margins in eating disorder treatment (and mental health treatment more broadly). This needs to change. Being affirming of queer and trans folks is life saving, and it’s important for hetero and cis folks to know their role and do their own learning/ unlearning.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Harm Reduction for Eating Disorders: What it is and Why it’s Not ‘Giving Up’ - Eating Disorder Harm Reduction</image:title>
<image:caption>Eating Disorder Harm Reduction (EDHR) hasn’t always had the best reputation in the eating disorder field, or in mental health more broadly. That’s not because it’s ineffective or “giving up” but because its core principles challenge long-standing beliefs about what healing is supposed to look like. Much like early substance use treatment models, EDHR bumps up against a cultural legacy that equates recovery with purity, abstinence and rigid compliance to generalized goals. For decades, dominant approaches to addiction and mental health were shaped by abstinence-only frameworks rooted in moralism: if someone couldn’t stop a behavior entirely, it was viewed as a personal failure rather than a symptom of suffering. These beliefs were influenced by the sociopolitical and religious values of the time, which equated ‘self-control’ and restraint with virtue and being a “good” person. But how backwards is that? A person is only good enough if they have enough willpower to fully stop all behaviors that are part of a mental health condition, that they didn’t choose?! Doesn't that just sound like a recipe for shame, and if so, how is that healing for anyone?</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Harm Reduction for Eating Disorders: What it is and Why it’s Not ‘Giving Up’ - Harm Reduction Isn’t “Giving Up”</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the most persistent misunderstandings about Eating Disorder Harm Reduction is the idea that it’s a form of “giving up” on recovery. But this misconception comes from a narrow, often perfectionistic view of what recovery is “supposed” to look like. When we expect people to eliminate all behaviors immediately or follow a rigid path toward an idealized end state, we unintentionally replicate the very dynamics that fuel eating disorders: all-or-nothing thinking, control, rigidity, and shame.</image:caption>

<image:caption>If you’re looking for a ready-made resource to reference or share with clients/colleagues: Flter Magazine has compiled a practical “Eating Disorder Harm Reduction” PDF resource. It includes harm-reduction tips developed with input from ED-specialists (nutritionists, dietitians, dental health professionals), framed as safety-oriented recommendations, not prescriptive treatment advice. I love being able to provide this resource to clients and families knowing they can take measures to stay safe while engaging in behaviors that could otherwise harm their physical and mental health. And in case I haven’t made this clear- it’s not that I want anyone to engage in harmful eating disorder behaviors, but I know that it’s not up to me when and if they stop. I can (and will) provide encouragement, tools and foster motivation, but at the end of the day, people will do what they are ready to do and it’s my job to offer as much safety as I can and tons of compassion for how hard this is.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Mental Compulsions: How to Stop The Most Difficult OCD Ritual - Mental Compulsions in OCD Recovery</image:title>
<image:caption>As an OCD therapist and person with lived experience, I can say for (almost) certain that trying to manage mental compulsions is one of the hardest parts of OCD treatment. This is because unlike compulsive behaviors that we can physically choose to engage in or not engage in, many feel like they have less control over their thought processes. After all, isn’t this something we learn early on in OCD treatment- that we can’t control our thoughts?! The answer is yes and no. It’s true that we can’t control the automatic thoughts that pop into our brain, but we do have agency in what we do with that thought. We also have agency over how much attention we give thoughts. Before we get more into that, let’s review what examples of mental compulsions are. Then we will go over some basics in terms of passive thoughts, active thoughts, attention vs. awareness of thoughts. Finally, we’ll end with tools to disengage from mental compulsions, which is why I am sure you’re all reading this!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Understanding the obsessive-compulsive cycle is a big part of finding relief from OCD. This cycle is what reinforces the intrusive thoughts and makes them anxiety provoking in the first place. Breaking the cycle isn’t easy, in fact it often feels totally paradoxical. When you feel anxious, it’s natural to want to do something to relieve the anxiety. However for people with OCD, this is where compulsions come in and unfortunately, the compulsions keep your brain scanning for a possible threat (aka- you’re probably going to feel very anxious!). Let’s look at an example from a common OCD Theme:</image:caption>

<image:caption>Loving someone with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can be an enriching journey filled with creativity, passion, and adventure. It can also be frustrating and challenging when we perceive our partners brain differences as deficits with bad or careless intentions. When the latter happens, we are more likely to judge or criticize our partners, which only fuels tension and disconnection in the relationship. For the person with ADHD, it also adds to the shame they likely already feel for their struggles (hello, internalized ableism). That is why it's essential to understand the unique challenges that come with this invisible disability. ADHD affects attention, executive functioning (planning, organizing, etc) impulse control, and emotional regulation. In relationships, this often leadings to misunderstanding, miscommunication and sometimes even shame and criticism. If you’re reading this- thank you, you clearly care about your partner and don’t want to shame them. I am a firm believer that we can move out of judging others when we have more knowledge and understanding about why they are the way they are. At ED and OCD Therapy, we often work with neurodivergent folks who deal with chronic misperception and this can really erode someone’s self esteem and self trust. So let’s dive in to what you need to know about your loved one with ADHD.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Essential Skills for Recovery: Daily Strategies for Coping with Eating Disorders</image:title>
<image:caption>I tell this to my clients often- recovering from my eating disorder was one of the hardest things I have ever done. It took so long to undue the mental and physical toll anorexia had on my spirit and soul. And when my behaviors shifted to bingeing and purging, as they so often do when trying to refeed yourself after a restrictive eating disorder, I felt so entrenched in shame and desperate for help with what to do when it feels like I am unable to stop myself from engaging in the next restriction-binge-purge cycle. This blog post will highlight a few of the core skills that I help clients in early recovery learn to practice when urges are high to engage in an eating disorder behavior. Not every person resonates with all of these techniques, and virtually no one feels they are effective at first or easy to use. It takes practice, patience and a lot of repetition. I recommend trying to practice them outside of a time where you are triggered first, and then work up to using them when distressed. This is because it’s going to be easier to do them when not overwhelmed, and when you have some practice with it, it’ll make using it when distressed feel a lot more accessible. These therapy skills draw from Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). In our work at ED and OCD Therapy, we often use tenants of these approaches to help our clients manage the distress that is inevitable in the early recovery stages. Let’s go over a few of our favorites!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - From Skinnytok to Ozempic: Navigating the Pressure to Lose Weight When Trying to Heal From an Eating Disorder</image:title>
<image:caption>Lately it feels like the pressure to lose weight is the most pervasive it’s been since the 90’s (where are my fellow 90’s kids at?!). The 2010’s felt like such a refreshing shift, while body ideals still very much existed, for a small moment in time, women and femmes were granted a little more flexibility in terms of body size and shape. Of course, it was never truly inclusive of fat folks, and if you were “curvy” it had to be in the “right” way (thanks, Kardashians). Obviously, it was far from perfect, but compared to the heroin chic trends of the 90’s, there was at least a little relief.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I hope this helps offer some perspective and also validation to the very real desire to achieve the “ideal” body. Society sells us so many message about how much greater our life would be with a smaller body- but nothing is worse than feeling trrapped in an eating disorder. I am rooting for you, this battle is so hard. If you want support in eating disorder recovery, body image, trauma, anxiety or more- my team would be honored to support you. <image:title>Blog - What exactly is feminist therapy? - Feminist Therapy Historical Context:</image:title>
<image:caption>Feminist therapy is foundational to our values and approach to therapy at ED and OCD Therapy. We get a lot of questions about what this actually means. At first glance, you might think this is just for women. You might think it means we are anti-male. This couldn’t be further from the truth! Feminist therapy is an evidence-based, justice-oriented approach that emerged in the 1960s during the second wave of feminism in the United States.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What exactly is feminist therapy? - A broader View of Mental Health</image:title>
<image:caption>Traditional mental health frameworks often individualize distress, attributing suffering to chemical imbalances or personal shortcomings. Feminist therapy challenges this narrative- seeing mental health distress as a morally neutral and natural response to systemic harm. While biology does play a role, feminist therapy recognizes that genes don’t exist in isolation; the environment we live in ‘pulls the trigger.’ We can’t separate the nervous system from the social system. Understanding this interplay allows for deeper self compassion and more holistic care. This approach also aligns with neurodiversity-affirming practice, rejecting the idea that some body-minds are inherently “better” or “more normal” than others. Instead, we celebrate diverse ways of thinking, feeling, and being. Rather than forcing conformity, feminist therapy invites accommodation, creativity, and authenticity.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What Does it Mean to Define Your Own Recovery? - Often when people enter eating disorder therapy or seek support for recovery, they’re handed a generic script about what recovery “should” look and feel like. While it can be nice to have a sense of direction, the issue with this is that recovery is really not one size fits all. Everyone has their own unique experience of healing from an eating disorder and having an “ideal” to measure up to can feel just as suffocating as the thin ideal that got most of us trapped in an eating disorder in the first place!</image:title>

<image:caption>Most people experience doubts in their relationships at some point. You might wonder, “Am I with the right person?” or “What if I fall out of love one day?” These questions are typical — but when they become constant, distressing, and interfere with your ability to enjoy your relationship, it may be a sign of Relationship OCD (ROCD).</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Relationship OCD vs. Intuition: Understanding Relationship Doubts</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s important to remember that all relationships involve doubt at times. Feeling unsure or disconnected occasionally doesn’t automatically mean you’re in the wrong relationship. Doubt can arise from stress, life transitions, changes in attraction, or natural fluctuations in connection. The difference is that in ROCD, doubt becomes obsessive, consuming, distressing, and fueled by compulsions. Reasonable relationship doubt questions tend to be passing and manageable.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Relationship OCD vs. Intuition: Understanding Relationship Doubts - Final Thoughts</image:title>
<image:caption>ROCD can make it incredibly difficult to trust yourself and your relationships, but you’re not alone. By learning the difference between obsessive doubts and genuine intuition, by seeing how cultural myths set unrealistic expectations, and by understanding that the honeymoon stage naturally evolves, you can begin to step out of the cycle of anxiety and reconnect with your values. With the right support, it’s possible to build stronger self-trust, reduce compulsions, and create relationships that feel grounded and authentic. Reach out to my team to learn more or to explore therapy options with us! If we aren’t the right fit, we will refer you to someone in our network who we know and trust. <image:title>Blog - 9 Eating Disorder Myths That Harm and Truths That Heal - Eating disorders (EDs) remain some of the most misunderstood mental health conditions. Despite decades of research, harmful myths continue to shape public perception and unfortunately, even the treatment landscape. These myths can prevent people from seeking help, perpetuate stigma, and lead to inadequate or even harmful care. So many people who struggle with food and body image fall through the cracks because of these myths and stereotypes. So if you haven’t felt valid in your struggle, let’s debunk some of these so that you can get the help you need and deserve.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - 3 Liberation Psychology Practices You Can Use Right Now in The Therapy Room - What is Liberation Psychology?</image:title>
<image:caption>Liberation Psychology was founded in the 1970s by Ignacio Martín-Baró, a psychologist from Latin America who saw major limitations in traditional Western psychology. His critiques were bold, challenging the status quo and calling for a psychology that truly served people, especially those from marginalized and oppressed communities. Liberation Psychology values are foundational to how we practice at ED and OCD Therapy.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 3 Liberation Psychology Practices You Can Use Right Now in The Therapy Room - Reflection & Gratitude</image:title>
<image:caption>Ignacio Martín-Baró paid the ultimate price for his radical work. Devastatingly, he was assassinated for his commitment to truth and justice. His legacy, however, continues to inspire. Psychologists such as Adriane Aron and Shawn Corne have carried forward his vision, helping to build the foundation for liberation psychology as we know it today. Their contributions remind us that therapy can be more than symptom reduction, it can be a tool for empowerment, resistance, and healing. A Call to Action Liberation psychology challenges us to rethink therapy: as a pathway toward both personal and collective freedom. If you’re a therapist, consider how you can integrate these practices into your work. If you’re someone seeking therapy, know that you deserve care that acknowledges the systems impacting your mental health while honoring your resilience and humanity. If you’re curious about how liberation psychology might support your own healing journey, I’d love to connect. Reach out to my team to learn more about beginning therapy with a liberation-focused, anti-oppression approach.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Behind the Mask: Understanding ADHD in Women & AFAB Folks - High Masking ADHD: When you think of ADHD- what do you think of? And why is it so often a school aged white boy who can’t sit still?! What is so unique about school aged white boys that makes them prone to ADHD in ways that the rest of us don’t seem to be even considered for? Well, stigma and stereotypes for starters. ADHD has historically been seen as something that can only begin in childhood, and most often to young, white boys. Some of this reflects racial bias- a young white boy with behavioral issues is afforded curiosity about neurodevelopmental struggles while a BIPOC young boy with behavioral issues is seen in an entirely different light, and much less often given supports or approached with compassion. And young girls? Forget it. They can sit still, they don’t have ADHD! In order to “not cause issues” or be further marginalized- many gender and racial minorities learn to “mask” their symptoms. Being labeled comes with a different social price compared to our white boy peers. So we compensate, cover up, shame ourselves for not being able to get it together. But how long can this last? And what even is ADHD?</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Taboo OCD Themes: working with shame and steps to Healing</image:title>
<image:caption>OCD 101 If you’ve been following our work for a little while now, you likely know that OCD is not about a love of hand washing and organizing. OCD is a mental health disorder ruled by intrusive thoughts that the person does not like, and compulsions (rituals) that temporarily reduce the anxiety or disgust the intrusive thoughts bring. This only works very short term, which is why you might find yourself (or your loved one) doing the rituals over and over. It’s actually FUELING the fear, not preventing it. Which is why in OCD therapy, we work on breaking that cycle so that the brain gets a chance to learn that just because your thoughts feel scary or anxiety producing- they actually won’t hurt you and they certainly are not facts. OCD is very serious, in fact, it is considered one of the top ten most debilitating health conditions of all times- both physical and mental, according to the World Health Organization.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Taboo OCD Themes: working with shame and steps to Healing</image:title>
<image:caption>Final thoughts Taboo OCD themes like POCD are very painful to be caught up in. It’s crucial to have a specialized therapist; sometimes, unintentionally, therapists untrained in OCD can make OCD worse. This is because it takes special training to understand how to work with OCD. It’s incredible brave of you to even consider getting help, and we are here for you when and if you want to move forward with healing from the pain of OCD. Just to add a little comfort- most of our team also has lived experience of OCD and has walked in similar shoes. We are not here to judge you. We get it, and we want to help you. Questions? Feel free to reach out to us and we’d be happy support you in either working with us or finding other resources to support your journey.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Hidden Dangers of Intermittent Fasting - Why is this important?</image:title>
<image:caption>You definetly don’t have to look hard to hear about the hype of intermittent fasting. It’s all over social media and chances are people in your social circle are humble bragging about it. As an eating disorder survivor and therapist, I not only find this annoying, I also find it extremely harmful. People start spouting off things they have heard online as if they are science backed facts. Most of the time when you look deeper, the “science” isn’t actually sound- meaning it’s not peer reviewed literature with double blind, longitudinal studies with a large sample size and controlled variables. Often, the “science” pop culture spews about intermittent fasting is related off their own personal experience or a small group of people, with no controlled variables and no long term follow up. This is a big problem. Making claims like this leads to vulnerable people making rash decisions and possibly leading them down a path of harm. When it comes to Eating Disorders, there is even more risk. Those who are predisposed to have an eating disorder (via genetics) can develop a full blown eating disorder when they start any kind of restrictive diet- and yes- intermittent fasting is absolutely a diet. Anything that involves restriction of food is a diet. And even if you don’t have the genetics for an Eating Disorder, there can be serious health consequences.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Neurodiversity affirming care has unfortunately become quite a buzz term, losing meaning and instead focusing on drawing people in for profit. Neurodiversity is often used as a euphemism for autism and/or ADHD, a way people signal these neurotypes in an attempt at talking about them in less stigmatizing ways. While this can sound like a positive thing, it can actually be very harmful because it doesn’t explore the real continuing stigmas and lack of access and understanding many neurodivergent people experience in a world not built for us, and does little to disrupt or dismantle ableism as a systemic structure of oppression.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Finding the right fit: Red Flags in Eating Disorder Providers</image:title>
<image:caption>Choosing the right therapist for your eating disorder recovery journey is crucial. Personally, I went through around 4-5 therapists in my own recovery before I found the one I truly clicked with! And since the quality of the therapeutic relationship is the most important factor in successful therapy, it is imperetive to keep looking until you find that right fit.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Finding the right fit: Red Flags in Eating Disorder Providers - Therapy should be a safe, supportive space where you feel heard and understood. If your sessions consistently feel like lectures and leave you feeling more ashamed than supported, I reccomend exploring your other options. It is hard to change providers but so worth it when you find that one that truly clicks. Your mental health journey is unique, and you deserve a therapist who recognizes and respects that. Eating disorders require true specialty care. If you think my practice might be a good fit for you- we’d be honored to help. And if we aren’t a fit, we are happy to help connect you to other providers we know and trust.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Rediscovering your authentic self in Eating Disorder Recovery - One important thing in terms of sustaining recovery is reconnecting with and rediscovering who you are without the eating disorder. That sounds great, right? But how do we get there? This is something I commonly get asked by clients. It can feel daunting or even impossible. Many folks think their Eating Disorder is their true self. This is simply not true. You were not born with an eating disorder. Your eating disorder ‘part’ developed as a protective coping skill. We can have gratitude for that and also realize it’s likely not serving you anymore. As we let it go and work on behavior change, we may start to feel empty or lost. This is NORMAL and does not mean you are doing recovery wrong. It means your eating disorder is taking up less room in your life and it’s time to start rebuilding your true essence.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Supporting a loved one in eating disorder recovery - Supporting a child, spouse, family member or friend going through Eating Disorder Recovery is no easy feat. Eating Disorders have a way of wreaking havoc on relationships. I often call them the ‘disorders of disconnection’ because for the person suffering they become all consuming. The sufferer has limited brain space left for other things like family, social activities and their usual hobbies. In fact, you might look at your loved one and feel like they have become a completely different person. The thing to remember here is that- it is not your loved ones fault. This illness quite literally changes people’s brains. The sufferer who chronically restricts, goes into ‘cave person’ brain- even if they end of bingeing later. This cycle keeps the person stuck in survival mode, highly anxious, alert, rigid and scanning for food. Their capacity for joy, laughter and social connection takes a back seat. Every time you try to intervene, you might feel as if you are being pushed away further.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - One Thing That Keeps All Anxiety Sufferers Stuck - Ever wonder why your anxious and obsessive thinking keeps playing like a feedback loop in your head?</image:title>
<image:caption>Do you want to break the cycle but don’t know how? Do you often feel like it’s hard to be in the present moment? Many people have heard of the term ‘ruminating’ or overthinking and understand that it is generally not helpful; however, most people aren’t aware that ruminating actually fuels anxiety and is considered a mental compulsion. Even more common, most people don’t know how to stop ruminating and overthinking.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - When does exercise become Unhealthy? Signs and Treatment of Compulsive Exercise - It can be really confusing when you start eating disorder recovery and you are asked to stop exercising. You might be thinking “Wait- I thought this was healthy for me, why should I stop?!” And I get it. As a society, we are constantly fed messages about exercise being the best thing for our health. We receive messages like: “No rest days!” “No excuses!” “No pain no gain!”</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - What Does Ketamine Therapy Feel Like? - As a licensed therapist who has been utilizing Ketamine Therapy with clients since 2021, one of the most common questions I get is: “But what does it FEEL like?” It’s understandable to want to know what you’re getting into when you sign up for Ketamine Therapy. Letting go of control and surrendering to a psychoactive substance can be exciting, thrilling, nerve wracking and down-right scary– depending on the person and your experience with psychoactive substances so far. If you haven’t read our service page on how Ketamine works in the brain, I highly suggest reading that one first to learn about the science behind ketamine. But if you’ve already read that and have a good grasp on how it affects the brain and improves mental health, keep reading.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - What Does Ketamine Therapy Feel Like? - “I felt floaty, spacey, woozy, warm, like a happy sea sponge.” “I could hear the waves and feel the sand…everything felt more pronounced.” “I felt sedated but conscious enough to talk about what I was feeling, there was also a pain relief effect.” “It felt easy to exist in my body for once, I felt immense gratitude in a way I hadn’t felt before.” “I was transported in time, when I really let go, I went back to (in my mind) an old part of me that needed to be seen.”</image:title>
