BIPOC mental Health

Culturally Attuned Therapy for BIPOC Folks in San Diego, CA & Virtual Therapy in CA, UT, WA, FL

Have you ever felt like….

  • Therapy is fine and all, for white folks, but not something someone in your family would ever seek out?

  • Sharing about your struggles would make your family look ‘bad’- like you’d somehow be betraying them by seeking out mental health support?

  • Mainstream mental health spaces seem to be lacking diverse perspectives that encompass your true lived experience?

  • Afraid to seek out mental health services- in fear of how this might ‘follow’ you or worse- make you more vulnerable to being targeted by authorities like police, ICE or forced hospitalization?

If you answered yes to any of the above, that makes perfect sense. Therapy was built white folks and it has harmed BIPOC folks by pathologizing culture and forcing or coercing treatments. BIPOC folks are also often left out of research studies, or represented insufficiently compared to their white counterparts. We are committed to doing things differently. We tailor mainstream therapy approaches to be more inclusive to the BIPOC communities we serve and are apart of. Most importantly- we value your safety and autonomy and do not work with any form of law enforcement and protect your confidentiality. We are committed to anti-carceral approaches to care that aim to keep you healing in community- not in the confines of a hospital. Therapy IS for you, too. You deserve a space to heal that truly gets you. Check out the BIPOC clinicians on our team and read about their commitments to anti-oppression mental health care

BIPOC Mental Health Therapy

Culturally Affirming Therapy for BIPOC Individuals in San Diego and Online in California, Washington, Utah, and Florida

As a BIPOC person, navigating the world can come with a unique and often invisible set of emotional and psychological burdens. From daily microaggressions to systemic oppression, from family expectations to racial identity development—your lived experiences deserve to be understood, honored and incorporated into therapy.

At ED OCD Therapy, we offer culturally affirming, client-centered therapy for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) in San Diego and virtually throughout California, Utah, and Florida. Whether you are navigating racial trauma, assimilation pressures, or intergenerational stressors, this is a space created with your full humanity in mind.

Culturally Affirming, Identity-Responsive Therapy

As fellow BIPOC therapists (Allyson, Reece & Parisa), we understand the importance of not having to explain the basics of racism, colonization, or why “I don’t see color” is harmful. In our work together, your culture is valued and affirmed. We are committed to unlearning the ways white supremacy is embedded within the mental health system and the way conditions like “depression” “anxiety” or “PTSD” are conceptualized- especially for BIPOC folks and other marginalized groups.

We work with BIPOC clients to explore and address:

  • Racial trauma and systemic oppression: Including the impact of micro- and macroaggressions, racialized violence, and internalized racism.

  • Minority stress: The chronic psychological toll of existing in environments shaped by white supremacy and dominant culture norms (we are actually the global majority!)

  • Assimilation and acculturation stress: Especially for immigrants and children of immigrants navigating multiple cultural worlds and seeking assimilation to increase safety and feelings of belonging. The grief in this process is so real.

  • Immigration and mixed-status family challenges: Including fear, grief, guilt, and the emotional complexity of survival. Particularly in the climate of right-wing extremism, we feel strongly that no human being is illegal nor should they be forcibly removed from their homes.

  • Parentification and role reversals: Common in families impacted by trauma, migration, and economic hardship. Maybe you had the burden of being the family translator for your parents. Maybe you financially support multiple members of your family and feel guilty for focusing on your needs.

  • Multiracial and ethnic identity development: For those navigating "not enoughness," belonging wounds, and identity confusion. Mixed race identity is the fastest growing demographic in the US. And yet- there was a time when we were considered a result of an “illicit” marriage. To be mixed in America is to be questioned about our legitimacy, all the time. These experiences have devastating impacts on our self concept.

  • Cultural disconnection and reclamation: At different stages of racial identity development, you may want to disconnect from your heritage, and in others, you may seek to identify with every aspect of it. In order for us to have the most psychological well-being, finding a space where you can hold all of your truths is important. This can look like embracing your culture of origin and loving the parts of you that have become “Americanized” too.

Therapy Grounded in a Relational Cultural Lens

Healing happens in relationship. Our therapeutic style is warm, collaborative, and grounded in a relational cultural approach, which honors the interconnectedness of our identities, histories, and communities.

We do not pathologize your pain—we help contextualize it. Together, we’ll examine how systems of oppression have shaped your mental health and explore liberating, empowering ways to reclaim your voice, sense of self, autonomy, and joy.

This work is especially helpful if you're experiencing:

  • Anxiety or depression related to racialized experiences

  • Burnout from navigating predominantly white institutions

  • Body image or eating concerns linked to cultural ideals

  • Intergenerational trauma and family dynamics

  • Loneliness or isolation related to being first- or second-generation

  • Questions around cultural belonging and identity
