IS Trauma Therapy for you?
Trauma therapy is for anyone who:
Has experienced trauma of any kind including sexual trauma, relational trauma, developmental trauma, systemic trauma and more
Is struggling with symptoms of PTSD or C-PTSD, including flashbacks, hypervigilance, dissociation (including dissociative disorders), nightmares, intrusive thoughts, or shame
Is navigating grief, betrayal, loss or major life disruptions
Feels unsafe in their bodies or relationships
Feels stuck in cycles of toxic relationships, able to see the warning signs but having difficulty listening to them
Experiences trauma-related symptoms (like flight, fight or freeze responses) alongside Eating Disorders or OCD
Wants a trauma therapist who honors systemic context in the healing process (yes, our mental health is impacted by the socio-political context we live in!)
Trauma work is sacred, long and often very, very hard- AND it is possible to heal and develop a life of meaning and self worth outside of the terrible things that have happened to you.
You deserve exactly that.
Our approach to treating trauma:
We believe trauma is not defined by the event alone but by how it impacts your nervous system, health and access to safety and support.
Our liberation psychology and relational-psychodynamic approach integrates:
Somatic Therapy to re-establish a felt sense of safety in your body and reconnect to it in a healing way.
Narrative Therapy to help you process, reclaim and re-author your story
IFS (Internal Family Systems) to compassionately unburden parts of you carrying shame, fear or self-blame and create a cohesive inner system.
ACT and other third-wave cognitive behavioral therapies to challenge trauma-based beliefs, detach from negative core beliefs and rebuild trust in yourself
We also offer Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) as a powerful adjunct for trauma work.
Goals of trauma Therapy:
Reduce symptoms of PTSD/C-PTSD like flashbacks, nightmares, or emotional numbness
Feel more grounded and less reactive
Rebuild trust in self and others
Release shame and self-doubt
Make peace with the past (this does not require forgiving people who have harmed you, it’s about making peace with past versions of yourself)
Reconnect with joy, purpose, and values
Heal root causes of disordered eating or OCD symptoms
To feel safe enough again (or for the first time)
What to expect in a trauma therapy session:
Trauma therapy sessions look difference for everyone. Sessions may include:
Psycho-education on trauma’s effect on the mind and body- this helps you develop compassion for your body’s ways of surviving- most commonly: flight, fight, freeze or fawn
Co-regulation and grounding techniques to help your body move out of these survival states
Somatic therapy skills to assist in helping your nervous system find relative safety when triggered
Parts work and inner child healing to unburden the protective parts that developed due to the trauma and have since become over burdened (eg. an eating disorder or substance abuse part that works to try to distract you from the pain).
Processing past experiences at a pace that honors your window of tolerance
Understanding and healing the negative core beliefs developed due to the trauma
Reclaiming the narrative of your life story
Ongoing integration of coping skills for daily life
Trauma work is very arduous and painful at times- it has the potential to activate old wounds. However we will move at your pace, never forcing exposure or asking for details you aren’t ready or wanting to share.
Common Client Experiences In Trauma Therapy:
You may come in feeling stuck in survival mode, disconnected from your body and unsure if healing is even possible.
You may feel afraid of what memories or feelings will come up if you start processing your trauma.
You may even be unsure if what you are experiencing is trauma.
Over time, clients often describe feeling more present, more trusting of themselves, more connected to their body, able to use their voice to express their needs and feelings- and ultimately more resourced internally to navigate life. Trauma therapy doesn’t erase your pain, but it can change the way you relate to it and helps you integrate it in a way that will leave you feeling a little more “free” inside.
I personally love the Kintsugi metaphor from Japanese art for describing what healing from trauma is like- I highly recommend you check it out by searching for it on YouTube!
